What is a Wiki?

Watch the video below for a short explanation (see below).

Create a Wiki

Create an educational wiki to allow students to create content and collaborate. Go to: http://www.wikispaces.com/site/for/teachers100K. This site allows educators to create their own private wiki (visitors must log in to view it) as long as it is used for an educational purpose. Sign up today, and invite some friends to join in a collaborative project! The image below tells you how many free wiki spaces are available from Wikispaces- the site is giving away 100,000 private spaces for free (normally $5/month).

  1. Right-click the link above.
  2. Click the link to www.wikispaces.com/t/x/teachers100k.
  3. Enter your account information - make sure you click the radio button for Private and click the check box for "I certify this space will be used for K-12 education."
  4. Log into your space and add a simple line of text on a new page (New Page).
  5. If we have time, invite a friend to the space (Manage Space).

Features of a wiki

A wiki allows you to add many different items on a page. You can make your text bold or italicized or even underlined, although users may mistake this for a hyperlink. Creative designers may choose to add color or change the size of the text.

You can have a hyperlink to a website or a link to another page on the site, like the home page. You can also include an embedded document: . You can also create a table...

...or bulleted list:
  • using the editing tools in the floating tool bar (only visible when you click Edit this page).
  • Click Preview to see how your information will look in published form.
  • Click Save to accept your changes.
    • Important: information will be lost if you navigate from the site without saving!

How about a picture? Everyone loves images!

One awesome feature of a wiki is the ability to include a widget. A widget is a small snippet of code that allows users to view or manipulate text or information on a website. The video at the top of this page and the sign-in form on the home page are widgets.

*Remember, good web designers take time to plan out the look, feel and communication media for their site. By jumping right in without planning, we are ignoring some important design rules. Before you publish and promote your wiki to others, it would be wise to have a few people review it and provide you feedback for improvements.

PB Wiki: PB Wiki is another great option for free wikis. The site boasts, "Making a wiki on our site is easier than making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich," which is why they named the site PB wiki. However, FCPS currently supports Wikispaces over PB wiki, so this may be a deciding factor for you.
